MSIE in light of recent patents

Posted in General at 12 pm

Microsoft’s MSDN has the following to say about Internet Explorer and the question about what would change if there was fallout from the embedded media patent suit.

From msdn.microsoft.com/ieupdate/:

“Given the present legal status as well as requests made by partners and customers, Microsoft will, for the time being, not move ahead with the modest steps it intended to take to modify Windows and Internet Explorer as a result of the August jury decision in the Eolas patent lawsuit. “

Bluetooth Headsets

Posted in General at 10 am

Yay! Apple’s new Bluetooth Update 1.5 finally supports headsets.

It’s finally coming together! Now all I need is to actually buy a BlueTooth dongle (or a new laptop) and then an appropriate headset to match.

Halftime Tivo or Reply Needed

Posted in General at 5 pm

At the very end of the halftime show of the superbowl, did Justin Timberlake rip off part of Janet Jackson’s shirt?

I’m not saying he did, but I thought I saw something kinda strange.

I’m so glad the game started to pick up. 4 minutes left in the first half and no points? Then 2 scores by each side in 4 minutes? Crazy.

Web Power Tools

Posted in General at 3 pm

So last night, Nick Finck and I presented a great set of tools for Web development at the DevGroup Meeting. I’ve written up the notes from the Web Power Tools meeting as one of my WebDev articles.

I even got the following note afterwards:

THANK YOU for a great DevGroup presentation, last night. We’ve decided you are “fated” to be a teacher. Thank you for sharing.

Well that was sure nice.

Bad Aliasing

Posted in General at 11 pm

Okay this doesn’t make a lot of sense.

bad-alias (17k image)

I installed OpenOffice.org, the open-source office suite. It uses the X11 environment, which I know is different from the Aqua environment, but I don’t know what’s up with the anti-aliasing artifacts that I’m seeing. They look like they *might* support some sort of sub-pixel smoothing technology on an LCD display. But I’m on a CRT so it just sucks. I’m actually hoping that I can look at this entry on my iBook’s screen and see a difference in the image above.

Maybe there’s a setting somewhere that I can re-configure. Not that OO.o is anywhere near fast enough to actually work for me on the Blue and White G3…

Color Theory

Posted in General at 8 pm

This and the Snowman House of Horror have always been my favorite Calvin and Hobbs cartoons.

Calvin: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn’t they have color film back then?

Dad: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs ARE in color. It’s just the WORLD was black and white then.

Calvin: Really?

Dad: Yep. The world didn’t turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.

Calvin: That’s really weird.

Dad: Well, truth is stranger than fiction.

Calvin: But then why are old PAINTINGS in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn’t artists have painted it that way?

Dad: Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.

Calvin: But… but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn’t their paints have been shades of gray back then?

Dad: Of course, but they turned colors like everything else in the ’30s.

Calvin: So why didn’t old black and white photos turn color too?

Dad: Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?
